WilkenOn Friday's Lutheran Internet radio show, Issues, Etc. - a listener's question caught my attention as one that would be good to answer in our Lutheran circles. The question revolved around what the church and Christians call themselves. Are we disciples? Are we Christ followers? Is there a difference? Why is the name Lutheran important or is it important?  Pastor Todd Wilken gives a prolonged answer that sheds a great deal of light on the issues surrounding what is in a name and how we label ourselves as Christians.

There is an archive of other Issues Etc. shows here.  This interview covers questions related to Jesus's suffering and death on the cross. We learn about the 7 words spoken at the cross with some depth of conversation. On this Holy Week and approach Good Friday, this is a wonderful reflective interview with three hymns in between interview segments.

Pastors123Another very fine discussion on a rarely discussed topic was found on this week's Issues, Etc. with Todd Wilken. In this Pastor's Roundtable, we learn about the Lutheran confessions as found in the Book of Concord. These symbolical (listen for the terminology explaination) books are important to pastors and to laity.

The pastors discussing this issue are all confessional Lutheran pastors from the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. Join Pastor Wilken and Pastor Charles Henrickson of St. Matthew Lutheran-Bonne Terre, MO and Pastor Chris Esget Immanuel Lutheran-Alexandria, VA as they discuss many fine questions regarding this topic on the Lutheran Symbolical Books. The base question that is answered is this: "What makes a Lutheran, a Lutheran?"

Questions:

  • What does the terminology symbol or symbolical mean?
  • What do Lutherans refer in terms of books as symbols?
  • What do we mean by subscription, exposition or exhibition with regard to Lutheran Confessions?
  • How unconditional must a subscription be to the Lutheran Confessions to be Lutheran?
  • Why can we not just agree on the essentials; why have a big old book?
  • Do just pastor or also the laity to adhere to the Lutheran Confessions?
  • Should the Lutheran pastor should have read the book of concord prior to ordination?
  • What is the difference in subscription - quia vs quatenus?
  • Why is a quatenus subscription not a good one?
  • What is the distinction in quiz vs quatenus and what is means for being Lutheran?
  • Why the word symbol versus creedal to describe Lutheran confessions?
  • Is unity in our Lutheran Confessions important today?
  • What should we do about doctrines in the Bible that are not covered in the Lutheran Confessions.
  • Should laity to be encouraged to read all the Lutheran confessional materials and books?
  • How can we get a greater aptitude in the congregation for the learning of the Lutheran Confessions?
  • How do the Lutheran Confessions differ from other confessions?

Lutheran Piety vs Pietism PDF Print E-mail

Recently, Issues Etc. had a good discussion on the concept of Christian Piety as opposed to pietism. Words do have meaning and piety and pietism are NOT the same thing. Pastor Heath Curtis of Trinity Lutheran-Worden, IL talks to Todd Wilken on this subject. As part of this subject, here is a PDF on the matter to consider. Download a PDF of “Things Christians Say (but shouldn’t)” by Todd Wilken

As part of the discussion, here are some question ellipses that you can see if you can answer.

I believe that I cannot by my own…

Lord now let us…

The Lord be with you…

This is most certainly …
